BMI compares an adult’s weight with the square of height and is commonly used as a screening measure.
BMI = weight in kilograms ÷ height in metres².
For 72 kg and 1.75 m: BMI = 72 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) = 23.5.
For adults, 23.5 falls in the healthy-weight screening range of 18.5 to less than 25.
BMI does not directly measure body fat and cannot distinguish fat, muscle and bone. It should be considered with other health information. Adult categories are not the correct interpretation for children or teens, and the result is not a diagnosis.
